Renfrew Rocks! Geology Field Trip: Stomping Through Time

May 5 @ 8:30 am - 6:00 pm

Renfrew Institute member discount: $5 per seat.

Geologist Jeri Jones will lead a field trip, “Stomping Through Time: The Great Valley and South Mountain,” on Saturday, May 5, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. The trip, for teens and adults age 15 and up, is sponsored by Renfrew Institute in partnership with the Franklin County Rock & Mineral Club.

The excursion will have a local focus, visiting several active quarries in the area. All stops are not confirmed yet, but should include: Devil’s Race Course boulder field, Specialty Granules, Inc., Strawberry Hill Quarry, Mount Cydonia, Carbaugh Run, Reed Hill Copper Mine, Caledonia Furnace, and a stop in the Tomstown/Gap area.

“Imagine if you could cut a slice of the Earth’s crust and pull it up, allowing you to see the bedrock—that view would be an incredible story about our landscape,” Jones said. “Among many interesting sites, we will see areas of rock that used to be on the ocean floor, and rock that was quarried during the Stone Age to make tools.”

A geologist for more than 30 years, Jones has conducted extensive research on Pennsylvania mining practices, authored several publications, and narrated a 3-part video series on regional geology known as “TimeWalk.” His book, TimeWalk—A Journey through Time in Adams, Lancaster and York Counties, Pennsylvania, illuminates local landscapes within the context of their geological past.

An adjunct professor at York College for 13 years, Jones also presents geologic programs at Harrisburg Area Community College and teaches an earth and space science course at Messiah College. Jones received the Digman Award for Excellence in Geologic Education by the Eastern Chapter of the National Association of Geoscience Teachers.

Those joining the trip should wear shoes and clothing appropriate for hiking through the quarries. Collecting gear such as buckets, hammers and newspaper for digging and collecting fossils is also recommended, along with hats and sunscreen. Cameras are welcome. Participants should also bring a bag lunch, snacks and beverages.

Departure is from the lower parking lot of Renfrew Museum and Park in Waynesboro at 8:30 a.m. Transportation is by bus only, provided. Seating is limited and pre-registration is required. For more information, call 717-762-0373 or email to info@renfrewinstitute.org.
