Geologist Jeri Jones explains the significance of stone characteristics in a tunnel during a field trip.

Stops vary each year on our geology field trips, with a focus on the geologic history and topography of our region. This year,  participants will travel by coach bus to Lansford, PA to tour the No. 9 Mine and Museum, once a rich anthracite coal operation. After the tour, we will travel a short distance south to New Ringgold, PA where there is an opportunity to collect fossils that represent a vast ocean about 385 million years ago. Geared for families, the trip includes collecting fossils, minerals and rocks along with some nifty geologic sites. Great opportunity to fulfill Boy Scout requirements or homeschooler project. Transportation by bus only, provided. Pre-registration required. Fee: $50/seat for adults, $30/seat for kids (ages 7–14 inclusive). Admission to museum is included in trip fee. Renfrew Institute member discount: $5 per seat (adult or child). Bring bag lunch. For more information, contact us at (717) 762-0373 or [email protected].
